Ikegami plans FED monitor

At the recent NAB 2008 show in Las Vegas, Ikegami’s exhibit contained a nano-Spindt FED monitor built by Field Emission Technologies Inc. The nano-Spindt FED monitor meets the requirements for Master Monitor designation specified by EBU-Tech 3320 and ARIB TR-B28. In a discussion with Display Daily, Ikegami also confirmed that they are planning to release a FED monitor in a couple of years. Read more at the link above.

Field Emission Technologies nano-Spindt display wins award

The Field Emission Technologies nano-Spindt monitor displayed last week at NAB 2008 in Las Vegas has won a “Best of Show Award” from Videography magazine.

The Best of Show Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the advancement of the art and science of video technology. These awards include the Videography Vidy Awards, the longest-running NAB awards program; and the DV Black Diamond Awards, which launched in 2007.

“Our teams searched the NAB show floor for products that were truly deserving of recognition,” says NewBay Media Broadcast & Video Group Vice President of Sales Eric Trabb. “Recognition with an award at NAB from the Broadcast & Video Group is a strong vote of confidence and admiration from these leading publications.”

It’s great to see FE Tech’s field emision display receive an award like this. If anyone reading this attended the show, please feel free to leave a comment. Thanks.

Field Emission Technologies to release high end FED monitors in 2009

According to IDG news service, Field Emission Technologies is planning to release a high end pro video FED monitor in 2009.  Spokesman Norihito Nishimoto said that the monitors will be offered in a range of sizes up to 32 inches.

In theory field emission display monitors have a number of advantages including low power consumption and high frame rates up to 240fps. However, Nishimoto said that the problem is that Field Emission Technologies doesn’t have a production line yet for its displays, and startup costs will initially drive up prices. He also didn’t comment on any plans to build a FED TV/monitor production line.

Latest OLED TV news

As the FED TV scene is quiet at the moment, I’ll report on the latest OLED TV developments.

Toshiba has withdrawn from the OLED TV market citing mass production costs and concerns about power consumption. This has to be a blow for Toshiba after pulling out of the SED TV joint venture with Canon. What next Toshiba?

Samsung is on track to show a 31″ OLED TV at CES 2008 in Las Vegas next month. They have also announced the production of a huge 40″ OLED TV. This has been compared to Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV which is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. Try walking into a store and buying a Samsung OLED TV.

New technical paper on Field Emission Display – Carbon Nanotubes

There is a recently released, very technical paper titled “Selection of Application Specific Single and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes by In Situ Characterization of Conductive and Field Emission Properties”

While that’s quite a title, it explains the conductive and field emission properties of individual single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes for those of you interested in how field emission displays and eventually FED TVs work.

Side by side comparison between FED and LCD – FPD 2007

The advantages of FED can be clearly seen when compared to LCD side by side. Hard to tell anything from the photo below but one participant from DisplayDaily.com at FPD 2007 in Yokohama is quoted below.

“If frame-rate doubling isn’t enough for you, one automotive display had frame-rate tripling, and Field Emission Technology (FET) was doing quadrupling: 240 frames per second. It was a gorgeous display with very crisp fast motion. But we know that FED can look great.” Read more
